Whether they are the infamous and despised agents of Interdyne, lost crews of Cybersun, or just referred to as the Traitors of the Syndicate, this role provides a rare opportunity.  It’s an opportunity that gives players a chance to tell a story while causing all sorts of trouble and spicing up station life for the rest of Nanotrasen’s hapless crew.  As this is a roleplay focused server, the goal isn’t to cause the most destruction in the shortest amount of round time, it’s to make things as interesting as your ambitions allow.  Your ambitions serve as your basic guidelines to follow while roleplaying as a backstabbing traitor, giving yourself limits on things such as killing the first crewmate you bump into.

This guide refers to the Antagonist 2.0 policy for Skyrat and thoroughly covers the Traitor role for new players! For more in depth guides covering the other types available, please check Malf AI, Cultist, Wizard, Heretic, and Changeling.

How to Traitor

  • First Rule of Traitor: You WILL upset someone, you ARE the opposing force working against the entirety of Nanotrasen’s crew. Don’t sweat it, though, it’s just a game at the end of the day and someone’s gotta do it!
  • Second Rule: This is a chance to be the roleplay hook that grips the server’s player population, don’t just run around shooting without word or proper build up first. Ambushes are an exception to this, though. Always remember to use the CI, or Combat Indicator, and wait about three seconds before engaging in a fair 1v1 fight. That means counting “One mississippi, two mississippi, three mississippi.”
  • Third Rule: You are allowed to flirt and lure crew into danger with erotic intentions to eliminate a target, but ERP is NOT the focus of being an antag nor is it protected from other players interrupting a fling. This is a server for players of 18 years and up only, but the overall goal of a Traitor on Skyrat is to instill paranoia and fear in the crew.
  • Fourth Rule: The Interlink late arrivals area is off limits; it is strictly for ERP and roleplay protected from the antics of Traitors and antags of ALL kinds. Do not take the shuttle to the Interlink and plant bombs by the dorms there, this will result in a quick antag ban.
  • Fifth Rule: Seek LOOC permission before RR, or Round Removing, a non-aggressive player. As long as a target isn’t a Head of Staff, you have full permission to make it impossible to bring back a consenting player without fear of an Ahelp. RR is perfectly fine against bold Security Officers or Assistants hunting you down solo; if they take this risk going after you, they are asking for the danger of being lost in space.

From hostage situations, inciting a riot, encouraging Cargonia to become independent, setting off bombs that leave the station in ruins, or something as simple as making a big mess for a janitor to clean up and want to quit; your options are limited only by your own creativity and administrative approval for dangerous stationwide ambitions. Here’s a quick rundown of the basic things to know to be the best damn sneaky spy, or loud corporation hating revolutionary you can be on Skyrat!

Setting your Ambition

The first important change about being any sort of antag on Skyrat is that things work a bit different than what you may be used to on other servers. In Skyrat, you are not told your objectives, you have the freedom to make your own goals!

Overview of the ambition panel

There’s a LOT going on here, but let’s break this down one step at a time.

  • First, you are able to choose a template if you feel overwhelmed and want a quick and easy way to get started being a space asshole.
  • Second, you can skip following a premade template and write your own narrative. Self explanatory, just write whatever your heart desires for your character’s goal and reason for seeking it. Doesn’t have to be much, just a sentence or two!
  • Third, write up your objectives. It’s all freeform and up to you to decide what you want to work toward. From stealing the station’s nuke disk and its pinpointer, to stealing the janitor’s mop; whatever comes to mind, go wild!
  • Lastly, choose your intensity. Admins need to see this so they can prepare for the possible issues that might come up when you decide to bomb the entire station and gib every crewmember. Anything above medium will require Admin approval, so please be patient and be prepared to justify why you will be killing crew members. A good example for medium intensity might be; “Assault may occur if I am discovered while sneaking into tech storage. To steal insulated gloves and then hack my way to my objective!”

Tools of the Trade

As a proud freedom loving member of the Syndicate, all active field operatives are provided with the latest in PDA uplink capabilities to teleport in equipment ranging from the classic blood-red hardsuit to the chaos of a good ol’ F.R.A.M.E. cartridge and a few ‘misplaced’ Telecrystals. The currently available full list of Syndicate gear won’t be covered in complete detail here, as things are always changing with every new update!

To access this special mode on your PDA, first make certain your ambitions are submitted and approved by staff if necessary. Then find a secluded part of the station where other crew won’t find you with a lethal weapon materializing in your hands. You will be given a special code after ambition approval that can always be referred back to under your IC tab, in the Notes option. It's random each round, but here's an example:

Simply copy the Uplink Passcode you are provided and look for the Messenger under general functions.

Click on Set Ringtone to paste in the code, click okay, and with a soft beep…

The Syndicate PDA Shopping List

You should now see this lovely Syndicate red shopping list! Feel free to take your time reading over all the gear available during your particular round and spend your Telecrystals on the items that will see you to your objectives. Don’t be discouraged and feel that you’d have to pass on ordering fun gear, or fret over discontinued things like the Energy Crossbow if you don’t see it. Take a gamble if you’d like and order a Syndi-Kit box, you might find exactly what you’re looking for if you’re lucky!

You can then close this menu by clicking on the Lock option at the top right, and return your PDA to normal. If you need to buy anything else later on, follow the same steps above to gain access to the Uplink again at any time.

Fun Combos and Ideas

With all the main details covered, your approach to being a Traitor is entirely up to you at this point. Through smart plays and creative thinking, you’ll leave Nanotrasen’s crew in a confused state of panic. All while you enjoy a lovely shuttle trip home at the end of a long day’s work stealing the station’s blueprints. Make us proud, agent, by achieving this as often as possible.

  • Consider asking staff if working as a Contractor is an option. Capturing crew members alive to be ransomed back to Nanotrasen is a handy way to make a few more TC.
  • Using the CQC book can easily make you a formidable threat to anyone not aiming guns at you. Consider taking things a step further and challenge a crewmember to a wrestling match to the death.
  • Ask staff if you can act as a double agent and work against another Traitor. Chances are you could turn a round into a game of spy vs. spy with the crew caught between.
  • Think about what job you currently have as a traitor and put it to good use. If you’re a psychologist, consider luring someone in for an evaluation that might end up with the patient going missing or brainwashed. Space is a dangerous place, accidents happen all the time!
  • Emagging a communications console will allow you to communicate directly with the Syndicate Command in an active roleplay manner with a lovely red theme. This can be a great way to ask staff for help with a task or new objectives if you want suggestions without using an Ahelp. Just be sure to reset the console back to normal with the last option before you log out!

Tips and Tricks to Staying Alive and Free

It’s easy to make one mistake too many and be locked up by Nanotrasen Security very quickly if you aren’t cautious. Here’s a few tips that might just help you avoid becoming the newest addition to the station’s long term prison residents.

  • Do not order your gear prematurely, as this could get you caught in the event of a random search. The station will often go to Blue alert early in a round, particularly as a precaution when communications are detected from the Syndicate.
  • Do not be afraid to run away, openly fighting against a mob of other players all alone is not always the best option. Especially if Security deputizes a few crafty assistants. Do not be quick to kill anyone you get into a fight with either, the time could be better spent running after you beat your pursuer down. Remember to aim for the legs.
  • There is a high chance that there might be other traitors active on the station with you. Strength in numbers is a useful tactic to achieve your ambitions against Nanotrasen!
  • Do not be afraid to bribe people. Many will simply ignore your wrong-doings for a bonus to their salary.
  • You can hold people at long range gunpoint by holding down shift and middle-clicking your target with a gun in hand. The longer you keep your aim trained on a target, the more damage the shot will do.
  • A perfect tactic to losing the heat or avoiding being caught by security is finding a way to frame another crewmember. Leaving a bag full of spare TC’s and a PDA in Uplink mode could draw attention away from you, with Admin approval.

TLDR QUICK GUIDE

  • Don’t panic, remember to breathe and memorize the rules. Shit CAN and WILL happen, it’s okay to be caught early!
  • Always, ALWAYS remember to activate your CI, or Combat Indicator, for three seconds minimum BEFORE jumping to mechanics. Forgetting to do so will get you in trouble with staff.
  • Feel free to round remove security or assistants trying to hunt you down without backup.
  • Be creative, come up with a list of objectives and set your ambition intensity level accordingly.
  • Be sure to submit your objectives and intensity when you have decided on a plan BEFORE acting on it.
  • Don’t be shy, Ahelp for questions or trades to get special announcements if needed, staff want to work with you to achieve your goals of shaking things up!
  • Remember your code words, work with fellow Traitors if you can and if your goals align.
  • NEVER use your PDA to buy equipment in a place often visited. The last thing you want is to give a player a reason to shout on the radio for security about a red hardsuit materializing in your hands in the bar!
  • Always try to remember to have fun, and don’t go out of your way to be a dick. At the end of the day, this is a game to enjoy with other players just like you and coded by players like you. So please, help make the server an awesome place for action and roleplay by being a good sport!
